Stanford J.'s Story

Of eight scholarships received on graduating Cohen 1954, Grambling was chosen because former band members Reed Coleman and Wilbert Hawkins returned to Cohen praising Grambling. In 1956 was propelled to life skills in New York with my family and taking gigs in Philadelphia, fantastic learning experiences. Worked for Chief Apparel clothing manufacture company. Summer jobs included child care for the Housing Department of New York, Play School with the City Of New York and Mount Tom Day Care Center of New Rochelle, NY. Returned to Grambling in 1957 and graduated after a five year music curriculum. Was hired in August of 1959 by Superintendent Hanchey of Calcasieu Parish School Board to teach instrumental and vocal music at Grand Avenue High School in De Quincy, LA, from the Master Pay Schedule. Inducted into the U. S. Army in 1960, served two years with the Second Infantry Division Band, returned to Grand Avenue in 1962 with wife Ruthie and child with another on the way. Solos and Ensembles Competitions at local, district and state levels. The choir also had many trophies from the various levels. In 1966 Grand Avenue’s band was the first Black band to do what we dreamed of at Cohen, appear in a Mardi Gras parade, the Crew Of Iris. Grand Avenue was the first Black band to perform in the widely acclaimed Cal Cam Parade in Sulphur, LA. They were also first band of African descent to perform at a Louisiana Music Educators Association Music Festival, Mc Neese State University 1968. 1969 through 1970 worked as a member of music/band staff at Mississippi Valley State University. In 1970 was recruited to teach music in the Los Angeles School District. Along with employment obligations was very active politically as representative of United Teachers Of Los Angeles, American Federation Of Teachers, NEA, CTA, CFT, A. Phillip Randolph Institute and the city of Carson, California.
